Project Poseidon

“Poseidon" is UCR's inaugural endeavor in the creation and launch of a bipropellant liquid rocket, specially designed for competition. Our Poseidon Rocket is currently being developed to compete in the FAR-OUT collegiate rocketry competition this summer.

The overarching objective of this project is to provide engineering students with a hands-on, collaborative learning environment where they can cultivate new skills and gain valuable experience by actively participating in the design, fabrication, and testing of components for both our current and future rocket initiatives.

Currently, the project is in the design and manufacturing phase, offering numerous opportunities for enthusiastic students who are eager to explore the intricacies of liquid rocket technology.

Far Out - Liquid and Hybrid Competition

The Friends of Amateur Rocketry (FAR) Oxidizers Uninhibited Tournament (Out) is a collegiate rocketry competition for schools all over the world.

Teams compete in categories based on targeted apogee, focusing on hybrid and liquid engines. The competition promotes innovation, nurtures future engineers, and showcases students' year-long rocketry projects.

Propulsion Team
Combustion Devices
Completely design, fabricate, and thoroughly test the injector and combustion chamber assemblies to produce 650 ibf thrust efficiently using atomized Nitrous-Oxide and Ethanol.

Fluid Systems
Create the internal plumbing of the flight vehicle to transport propellants from the in-flight tanks to the injector with minimal pressure drop while taking advantage of the self-pressurizing properties of nitrous oxide.

Avionics Team
Data Acqusition (DAQ) & Control
Create and manage a real-time data acquisition system for recording and displaying data, facilitating live safety checks for launching and aborting sequences. Designed hardware for a server based valve system and ignition.
Ground Systems & Equipment (GSE)
Construct ground support equipment, including an engine test stand, to facilitate preliminary testing of rocket components and gather crucial data, ensuring a successful rocket launch
Structures Team
Payload & Recovery
Payload aims to shield sensitive biological experiments and instruments from intense rocket vibrations and heat produced during flight. The recovery team ensures the safe return of Poseidon through a two-stage parachute system.
Aerostructures
Design, simulate, and rigorously test the aero-structures of our Poseidon rocket to guarantee flight stability and structural integrity.
